Circadian Rhythm: The Heartbeat of Life

While you may have heard of the circadian rhythm, you might not know this daily cycle revolves around two key hormones: cortisol and melatonin. In the morning, cortisol levels rise...

Have you ever stopped to notice about how many rhythms surrounds us in our everyday lives? From music to ocean waves, our internal biology also beats to a drum, and it's all thanks to our circadian rhythm. Our internal clock is linked to the dance of the earth and the sun and enables our bodies to instinctively know when it's time to get things done and when it’s time to chill.

While you may have heard of the circadian rhythm, you might not know this daily cycle revolves around two key hormones: cortisol and melatonin. In the morning, cortisol levels rise to help you feel alert and ready to tackle the day, while melatonin increases at night to promote restfulness. But the problem is that these hormones are sometimes thrown off kilter, making you feel tired all day and wide awake at night.

Our bodies are extremely intelligent and are constantly adapting to our routines and environment in real time. The consistency in our daily lives can have a significant impact on our overall health and wellbeing. Factors like the time we wake up, our eating habits, exercise routine, and sleep schedule all play a vital role in our ability to age gracefully.

The longest living person ever recorded lived to 122 years old. When scientists and doctors examined her life with a fine-tooth comb to work out what made her special, many came to the conclusion of her routine. She woke up at the same time everyday, exercised at the same time everyday, ate at the same times everyday and slept at the same time everyday.

There are 2 things that have the greatest effect on our circadian rhythm: when we are first exposed to sunlight in the morning and our first meal of the day.

The No. 1 recommendation we could make is to get 5-10mins of natural sunlight as early in the day as possible. Even on a cloudy day the amount of light coming from the Sun is many times more than any artificial light. This sets off a chain of events in the brain, mostly associated with a large release in the hormone cortisol. This helps us wake up, feel alert, increases our cognitive function and enhanced our mood. But maybe most importantly it starts a 16 hour neurological timer for when our bodies should spike in the sleepy chemical Melatonin. So if we don’t get outside for the first few hours in the morning, that Melatonin spike will also be pushed back a few hours. No Bueno!

Our circadian rhythm also helps to regulate the timing of our metabolism, but this effect is actually bi-directional, meaning our metabolism can help regulate our wake/sleep cycle. If we break our fast at the same time each day it actually helps us sleep, cool right. When our circadian rhythm is in-sync it enhances our attention, memory, concentration, our immune system, energy levels, libido, fertility, and reduces the risk of virtually all age-related diseases.

However, we all know that it can be challenging to wake up feeling refreshed after a poor night's sleep, which can lead to a vicious cycle. That is why we created a range of products here at Eons, for each stage of the day to help us re-sync to our natural circadian rhythms.

Our Smart Mushroom Coffee is made with delicious coffee and packed full of amazing adaptogens, energy boosting mushrooms and mood balancing herbs. It will give you everything you need to start the morning off right which helps us end the day right.

We have also created two other products, the Calm + Focus Gummies and the Sleep Mushroom Gummies. The Calm + Focus gummies are great to keep you flowing throughout the day and the Sleep Mushroom Gummies will help you get the rest you deserve to reset your rhythm.
